The Hamptons season is almost here since the weather is getting warmer and summer is drawing nearer. Discover when to visit, where to stay, and what to do in the Hamptons in our comprehensive planning guide.

When is the best time to visit the Hamptons?

Whilst the Hamptons are spectacular in the summer, don’t overlook Long Island’s South Fork during its off-season. May and September, known as the “shoulder season,” are ideal months to visit this part of New York. Prices have dropped, the crowds have thinned out, and several restaurants have already opened. Furthermore, because the Hamptons is insulated on all sides, the temperature is somewhat warmer than it is in New York City, which means beach weather arrives a few weeks sooner and lasts a few weeks longer.

So, when making vacation plans, don’t limit yourself to June, July, and August. The greatest times to visit the Hamptons are before and after the hordes arrive.

Should you go to East Hampton or Southampton?

East Hampton and Southampton, the two towns that make up the Hamptons, have dramatically diverse scenery, and where you end up depends on your mood. If you want a laid-back, surfer experience, the villages to the east may be for you: Beautiful beaches, superb restaurants, and a more casual environment can be found in East Hampton, Amagansett, and Montauk. Meanwhile, Springs, which has long been a haven for locals and artists, remains an off-the-beaten-path location for people seeking less crowded bay beaches and spectacular sunsets.

The town of Southampton, to the west, includes the hamlets of Bridgehampton, part of Sag Harbor, Sagaponack, and Southampton Village. If you’re looking for a more formal Hamptons experience, this may be the slice of East End for you. Old estates, galas, and polo matches are de rigueur on this side of the town line. If you are into these activities then this is the place for you.

Where to Stay in the Hamptons?

Few hotels provide a more enticing stay than Airbnb.com,  and VRBO furnished homes, like a sunset view of Lake Montauk with Keller Hotels Private Residences. The hotel’s combination of rooms and cottages is right next to its popular Mediterranean-style restaurant, which is always busy from May to September.

Where are the Best Beaches in the Hamptons?

Where should you spend your time sunbathing in the east? That is partly a matter of personal preference. If you’re not from the Hamptons, there are a few options for paid day parking lots. Cooper’s Beach in Southampton is a long, broad beach with amenities and a large parking area.

Foster Memorial Beach (formerly known as Long Beach) in Sag Harbor is perfect for people who prefer to swim in shallow, calm waters or prefer a shorter walk to the sand. It is also accessible to the general public.

Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett is available to the public and features lifeguards, restaurants, restrooms, and an active surf break. Finally, near Montauk, Kirk Park Beach’s pay lot provides bathrooms and a short stroll across magnificent dunes, where lucky visitors may just view whales breaching offshore during the height of summer.

What type of Activities to do in the Hamptons?

Relax after a morning at the beach by strolling around Sagaponack’s Madoo Conservancy’s well kept gardens. This gorgeous area, founded in 1967 by artist, writer, and gardener Robert Dash, is like stepping into a magical dreamscape.

If the weather isn’t cooperating, drive to Bridgehampton’s Scuttle Hole Road for seated tastings at Channing Daughters Winery (reservations are recommended). You can even make a day of it by stopping by Wölffer Estate Vineyard in adjacent Sagaponack for a glass of the winery’s acclaimed rosé, followed by a digestif at Sagaponack Farm Distillery on the South Fork.

Carissa’s Bakery (two East Hampton locations) has a loaf of still-warm olive ciabatta. And, of course, no trip to the Hamptons would be complete without a meal at East Hampton’s decades-old celebrity magnet, Nick & Toni’s (reservations required).
