The Hamptons season is almost here since the weather is getting warmer and summer is drawing nearer. Discover when to visit, where to stay, and what to do in the Hamptons in our comprehensive planning guide.
Whilst the Hamptons are spectacular in the summer, don’t overlook Long Island’s South Fork during its off-season. May and September, known as the “shoulder season,” are ideal months to visit this part of New York. Prices have dropped, the crowds have thinned out, and several restaurants have already opened. Furthermore, because the Hamptons is insulated on all sides, the temperature is somewhat warmer than it is in New York City, which means beach weather arrives a few weeks sooner and lasts a few weeks longer.
So, when making vacation plans, don’t limit yourself to June, July, and August. The greatest times to visit the Hamptons are before and after the hordes arrive.
East Hampton and Southampton, the two towns that make up the Hamptons, have dramatically diverse scenery, and where you end up depends on your mood. If you want a laid-back, surfer experience, the villages to the east may be for you: Beautiful beaches, superb restaurants, and a more casual environment can be found in East Hampton, Amagansett, and Montauk. Meanwhile, Springs, which has long been a haven for locals and artists, remains an off-the-beaten-path location for people seeking less crowded bay beaches and spectacular sunsets.
The town of Southampton, to the west, includes the hamlets of Bridgehampton, part of Sag Harbor, Sagaponack, and Southampton Village. If you’re looking for a more formal Hamptons experience, this may be the slice of East End for you. Old estates, galas, and polo matches are de rigueur on this side of the town line. If you are into these activities then this is the place for you.
